Many people have heard of the carpal tunnel in the wrist. A similar tunnel exists in the foot and is known as the tarsal tunnel. This is on the inside of the ankle and extends just past the heel. The major nerve to the foot (tibial nerve) passes through this tunnel and splits into a number of branches. This nerve can become trapped within the tunnel and this is termed tarsal tunnel syndrome.
