The foot comprises 26 bones, one of which is located in the middle towards the outside of the foot. This is square in shape and is therefore called the cuboid. The cuboid forms joints (articulations) with the bones either side and helps with stability of the foot and weightbearing during walking and running. If these joints are overused, then the joints can become compressed causing discomfort. This can be directly around the cuboid or further forward towards the ball of the foot.
